Retro Restore
Retro Restore began with a simple realization: some of the most important moments in South African history were never properly archived.
We are a small team of passionate archivists from the Free State, dedicated to preserving South Africa’s media heritage before it is lost to time.
The Problem
A Nation's Memories
Are Fading
Across the country, VHS tapes are degrading in cupboards, cassette recordings are losing fidelity, CDs are suffering disc rot, and printed material is disappearing without ever being digitised. Every instance represents something that may never exist again.
Research from the Durban University of Technology found that, quote "in Southern Africa at the national policy level, senior officials and legislators are unaware to a considerable degree of what is required to adequately manage and preserve digital records."
We created Retro Restore to help prevent these memories from vanishing. Our work combines professional digitisation, restoration, and archival care to preserve media before time destroys it completely.
